SOUTH BURLINGTON–The 14-U OEC Lightning packed up their gear and headed over to Chittenden County as the Orleans County representatives in the 14-U Babe Ruth State Baseball Tournament.
The Lightning, a collection of some of the top ball players in this area in that age group, did not have a good showing, losing their first two games to exit the tourney earlier than most expected.
Game one kicked off at 11:00 AM on Saturday as OEC squared off against Suburban, a team representing Winooski and Colchester.
It was not pretty as the Lightning suffered a 14-1 loss, a surprise to the OEC fans in attendance.
Despite the lopsided score, the boys had to regroup and get ready to play in their second game, scheduled for 5:00.
Things did not get any better for the Lightning as the Montpelier/Barre crew laid into them, winning the game 16-5.
Two games and two loses, not what anybody expected to see from a team that has recently run roughshod over some heavy competition in Canada.
The most disheartening thing about the game, is that out of the thirty runs scored against the Lightning, the majority of them were unearned.
Everyone knows that if you give teams extra outs, it can come back to bite you, and that is exactly what happened last weekend.
OEC will be back in action next month when they travel to Granby for a select team tournament the weekend of the 24th in August.
