COVENTRY – Tyler Collins, 16, of Newport Center, died in a car crash Monday on Alderbrook Road in Coventry.
Collins, a junior at North Country Union High School, was reported driving a Hyundai Tiburon over the speed limit and headed west when he passed an Orleans County Deputy headed east. The deputy turned his cruiser around and activated lights and siren to stop the vehicle.
The deputy, who was not initially identified, said the vehicle temporarily disappeared out of sight but was later seen heading towards the intersection of Alderbrook Road and VT RT 14, where a Dodge truck, operated by Brandon Stevens, 24, of Newport, hit the driver's side door of the Hyundai.
Collins, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. Ambulances transported Collins' passengers – Johnny Crocker, 16, of Derby, and Dylan Germaine, 16, of Newport – to North Country Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries. Stevens was not injured.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage.
Tuesday, NCUHS Principal Bill Rivard called Collins' death tragic. Collins was well liked by his classmates and was very active in the Building Trades Class, Rivard said. School officials brought in grief counselors, who consist of guidance counselors, a school psychologist and counselors from the local mental health agency, for students, staff members and family members of those involved. Counselors will be at the school for the remainder of the week, Rivard said.
Part of Route 14 was closed about five hours while emergency personnel dealt with the crash.
The Newport City Fire Department, Newport Ambulance Service, state police, and the police crash reconstruction team responded to the crash. The Newport City Police also assisted.
Sheriff Kirk Martin had no comment about the incident yesterday.
