One Obstacle Left in Matt Morin’s Title Quest
ON THE ROADS OF VERMONT–When I called Matt Morin to ask him how he is doing and what he is doing in order to get ready for today's VPA High School State Championships in Middlebury, I caught him, along with his coach Sylvain Gagnon and teammate Carl Oberg traveling the cell phone service challenged roads of the Green Mountain State. After several episodes of "Hello... Hello.. can you hear me?," I was finally able to talk to both Matt and his coach about today's tournament.Sadly, due to the "wonderful" reception Matt was getting and the looming practice round, the conversation was a bit briefer than originally anticipated.Mike Olmstead: What is your mindset going into Championship play"Matt Morin: I am looking at the championships with an open mind. I just want to stay positive and have fun out there.MO: Since you last played at Sectional's, what have you been doing to prepare for your match?MM: I had a practice session with my Coach Dave Jankowski Sunday up at Jay Peak and have played some since then. Mainly I have been doing a lot of school work in preparation for graduation.Today (Tuesday) I am heading down to Middlebury to play a practice round with Carl, with the loser having to buy Ben & Jerry's after the round. Then we are going to stay down here and then go play tomorrow (Wednesday).MO: Do you have any worries or concerns heading into play tomorrow?MM: NopeMO: How about your competition?MM: Mount Abe's Jona Scott. I was paired with him last year, and am again this year. He was really tough last year, and Brooks Curran (of Harwood) is also pretty good. Hopefully I can go out there and defeat them.MO: Best of luck to you.MM: Thank you.I was able to briefly speak with coach Gagnon who said of Matt, "He has been right on top of his game."He is the guy to beat as long as he keeps his head in it."Morin will tee off at 11:00 with a foursome that includes the aforementioned Scott, Curran and Springfield's Alex Rumrill. The Ralph Myhre Golf Course will host the event, with competition starting at 8:00.North Country's Nick Kincaid will be competing for the Division I title in Middlebury as well, his tee time is slated for 9:10.
