ST. JOHNSBURY, VT - Police are not confirming that the body of a woman found near the Comerford Dam Road in Barnet belongs to that of missing St. Johnsbury Academy physics teacher and basketball coach Melissa Jenkins until a positive identification can be made. In the meantime, the body has been sent to Burlington for an autopsy.
Although police are calling the death suspicious, they are releasing very few details, Major Ed Ledo said yesterday evening.
Jenkins, 33, has been missing since Sunday evening. A friend of Jenkins went looking for the missing woman and found her car parked near Jenkins' home. Jenkins’ two-year-old son, unharmed, was inside the car and someone reported that the engine was still running.
Yesterday, while searching remote areas in the St. Johnsbury area, police found a woman's body around 1:30 PM.
“The state police have reached a critical part of this case,” Ledo said during a press conference yesterday. "The Vermont State Police cannot emphasize enough the importance of citizens coming forward with any and all information regarding this investigation."
Police want to hear from anyone who has information about this case especially anyone who may have traveled on Goss Hollow Road in St. Johnsbury and Comerford Dam Road in Barnet on Sunday evening, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
Police don't know if this is an isolated incident, but expect the public to use all diligence and vigilance while "out and about." "We're fully committed to this investigation," Ledo said. "We're not done with this case by a long shot."
Anyone with information that might be relevant to this case is asked to call the state police at 802-748-3111.
