ORLEANS–The Lake Region Rangers kicked off their on Saturday.
The boys defeated the Oxbow Olympians 1-0 to get their season started on the right foot, starting with some good play by their backfield.
"They played strong defensively," said head coach Tom Evans. "They weren't tested much, but when they were they came through nicely."
The Rangers, on their game from the get-go, were rewarded for their efforts when Anthony Wright knocked home his first goal of the season to get the Rangers on the board.
Josh Locke was the architect on the play, sending a cross to Wright, who was inside the eighteen where he one timed the ball into the Oxbow net.
"Josh took it out on the left wing, put a good ball in there and I just put it away," Wright said of goal.
After that, things slowed up bit, and their play became predictable.
"In the last 20 (minutes) we got a little to linear. Their was too much in the central and not enough variety in our attack," said Evans.
In the second half the team came out on fire, getting several good chances at Oxbow netminder Lucas Wheeler.
The first came as Clint Provoncha bared down on goal and fired a blast at Wheeler, who made the save.
The rebound went right to Alex Beauregard, but Wheeler was able to stop that too.
Beauregard would get another beauty of an opportunity on Josh Locke's cross, which nearly went in itself.
Alex went in after the rebound, but was completely taken out by an Olympian defender.
He shook off the play, and continued his driving style throughout the remainder of the game.
"It is a little different not playing net every day, but I played striker before, so I am just going to the ball hard and trying to get it in the back of the net," said Beauregard on his new position.
The Rangers had other chances, but several were nullified due to offsides, which did not please Evans, but is something the team will work on moving forward.
Both goaltenders saw action in the season opener.
Dennis Newland held court in the first half, while Logan Harper kept the nets clean in the second.
While pleased with his goalies' performances, Evans still has not decided on a definitive number one.
"I thought they both played well. I didn't see anything today that would make me go one way or another, so we will probably keep going this way for awhile."
Expect to see both netmeinders in action in when 1-0 Lake Region travels to Lamoille today for their second match of 2012.
Game time is 4:30.
