NEWPORT CITY - Rural Community Transit (RCT) is looking to start a commuter bus in the Northeast Kingdom.
RCT has applied for a federal grant to cover the cost of the bus. If RCT receives the grant, it could receive money from the state as well. David Towle, RCT operations and safety manager, does not know the amount of the proposed grant. If it were enough, the bus would travel from Newport City to White River Junction. If not, the bus would travel to St. Johnsbury and RCT would apply for other grants to have it travel to White River Junction. Once in White River Junction, riders have the opportunity to take other buses that travel outside the state.
“We realize Newport, St. Johnsbury, and White River need to be connected with a transit service,” said Towle.
