Sparks Threaten Gas Pumps

August 12, 2012

NEWPORT CITY — Newport City Firefighters responded to the One Stop Mini-Mart about 1:30 Saturday morning.
An unidentified clerk called the fire department after seeing fire in the canopy over the gas tanks. Upon arrival, firefighters saw no fire. After speaking with the clerk, firefighters learned an electrical issue in a ballast in the canopy had caused the problem.
Fire Chief Jamie Leclair said the clerk, prior to firefighters arrival, cut the power to the lights and gas pumps.
The ballast was disconnected and store owner Jamie Roy restored power to the pumps and station.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 2 a.m.
