NEWPORT CITY - Police evacuated a normally quiet neighborhood for over four hours Wednesday morning while they dealt with an alleged gunman.
Later in the day, the suspect, identified as Derick Niles, 36, entered not guilty pleas to reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. Judge Howard VanBenthuysen held Niles on $100,000 bail and ordered an in-patient evaluation for competency and sanity. Niles wasn't happy with VanBenthuysen's ruling.
"I can't believe that you're defending meth and getting hits taken out on people," said Niles in court. "I won't sell meth for them."
