STUDENTS TOUR SUGAR HOUSE

HOLLAND – Students learned about one of the Northeast Kingdom's sweet traditions Monday – how people make maple syrup.
Albert and Berthe Patenaude of Valley View Maple Products opened their sugar house to 180 first, second, and third grade students from the Newport City School.
Over the past few weeks, Holland Elementary School students visited the Patenaude's operation.
Monday's tours, directed by Green Mountain Farm-to-School, were designed to give the children a larger picture of Vermont's culture, Caitlin Loren of Green Mountain Farm-to-School said.
"A lot of the kids don't know where syrup comes from," said Berthe Patenaude.
"They see it in the store or they see it on the table, but they don't know the whole process. By bringing all the kids here, they see it right from start to finish."
It's important for people to learn the origin of their food, Loren said, and to support local farms. "It's a fantastic opportunity."
