A Taste of Newport on a Summer’s Eve

NEWPORT CITY – Are you looking for a place to sink your teeth into something delicious? If so, make your way to downtown Newport with its variety of restaurants to satisfy every pallet.  
Thursday evening, 100 individuals, some of whom came from as far away as Montreal and central Vermont, attended the second annual Jay Peak Resort Taste of Newport. Participants started at the Goodrich Memorial Library for wine and cheese. They finished at the Eastside Restaurant for dessert. In between, they sampled food from Newport Natural Café, Baan Thai Cuisine, Junior’s and Habaneros Mexican Grille, Lago Trattoria, Le Belvedere, and Hoagie’s Pizza.
All of the restaurants are part of the Fresh by Nature program, which connects local farms and local restaurants. The purpose of the program is to market downtown Newport as a culinary destination. 
Judging by the smiles on the participants, everyone seemed satisfied with the samples of food and drink.
Miss Vermont, Katie Levasseur of Burlington, was one of the participants. As part of her duties, Levasseur travels across the state to support community events, speak about her platform and participate in relevant charity work.
Levasseur, who grew up in the St. Johnsbury area, wanted to support an event in her native Northeast Kingdom.
“I think it’s wonderful,” said Levasseur of the Taste of Newport. “I had so much fun tonight supporting local farmers and supporting local food.”
Local farmers and the local economy is what keeps towns and cities growing, said Levasseur, who also stressed the importance of supporting local businesses.
