NEWPORT–It was a good weekend to be an Eagle, but a tough one to be a Crusader as both the Mid-Vermont Christian Eagles and Canaan Eagles flew into the Newport Elementary School this past weekend and picked up wins over UCA.
On Friday evening it was Mid-Vermont in to take on the Academy.
As the girls game got underway, UCA was without two of their starters as Nicole Roy is out for the season with a broken bone in her hand and Olivia Foster was out due to medical reasons, so the Crusaders were already at a disadvantage.
The Eagles took advantage of the situation, going up 18-3 in the first, eventually rolling to the 48-28 win.
Hannah Piette had twelve for the Crusaders, while Laura Libby added ten.
In the boys game, it was a rematch from the opening game of the Stephen Willey Tournament in Craftsbury earlier this month, and after winning by eleven one week to the day, Mid-Vermont really put the hammer down and won the contest 62-34.
The fourth quarter was the strongest eight minutes for the boys, as the DeLaBruere brothers Chris and Jon teamed up to score eleven points, while Paul Saaman added two.
Chris led the team in scoring with sixteen points, while Jon and Paul had eight.
Fourteen hours later the girls were back at it, this time it was the purple and gold of Canaan coming to play against the blue white of UCA.
The first quarter was very competitive, as each team scored twelve points. Piette had two bombs from downtown, Libby had a jumper and a lay-up, and Sydney Whipple put back a Whitney Carter rebound for two.
The next two quarters were not kind to the home team, as they managed only five points, while Canaan put up thirty-eight.
In the fourth, Carter got loose for six points, while Piette again hit two from beyond the arch.
Hannah led UCA with fifteen points, while Whitney contributed six.
To close out the basketball packed twenty hours, Canaan came out firing to take a 16-5 first quarter lead. They continued to score at will, and it was 46-18 after three.
The fourth quarter was again the boys time to shine, as they put up a weekend-high twenty-two points in the frame, led by Saaman, who scored eleven of his team high eighteen in the fourth. Chris DeLaBruere had seven, Jon had three, and Ji Kim had one point to round out the final quarter’s scoring.
