NEWPORT – UCA played host to the Whitcomb Hornets Saturday afternoon and after a close first quarter, they were held scoreless for 2 quarters of play, ultimately losing 48-16
The Lady Crusaders trailed early by a score of 6-0, but a 3 by Hannah Piette and a long 2 by Olivia Foster, set the stage for Christina Maxwell to pump in a 2 of her own with 2 minutes left in the 1st quarter to cap of the comeback and put UCA on top 7-6. Piette would add a free throw and Whitney Carter connected on a nice jumper from the left elbow to give the Lady Crusaders a 10-8 lead.
This however would be the last time United Christian Academy would get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter.
The Hornets would be ahead 21-10 at halftime and the lead would swell to a 20 point gap at 30-10 at the end of 3 quarters of play.
Whipple got the Crusaders back in the scorer’s column with a step back jump-shot; on the next possession Piette would hit a long 2 to cut the score to 30-14. Whitney Carter finished off UCA’s scoring on the day with a nice turn-around jumper from the low block to bring the score to 38-16. The Hornet’s would tack on 10 more points before the buzzer, as they walked away with a 48-16 victory.
After the contest coach Sarah Roy was all smiles despite the lopsided scoreboard. “We came out strong in the first, and then we couldn’t buy a basket.” She would go on to add that she, “Was proud of the girls attitude, they didn’t let the scoreboard get them down, and they continued to work on the things that we have been needing to work on.”
Christina Maxwell led the team with 6 points, while Hannah Piette chipped in with 4, and Olivia Foster, Whitney Carter, and Sydney Whipple all added 2.
Reba Hunt led the Hornet’s with a game-high 14 and Rachel Wood added 13 of her own.
The loss drops the Lady Crusaders to (1-10) on the season. They will resume action when they travel to Mid-Vermont Christian School this Saturday. Game time is set for 1:00.
