Urie Nets Two in Lady Rangers 2-1 OT Win
ORLEANS – Lake Region jumped out early against the Danville Indians, but it took their 3rd overtime session of the year before the Blue and White could walk away with the 2-1 victory off the foot of the teams’ leading scorer, Tyrah Urie. After coming off back-to-back losses against the rival Hazen Wildcats, the Lady Rangers needed a victory to get their season back on track. Amber Bernier returned to the pitch after suffering an injury early in the season and Coach Brad Urie opted to start Sophomore Jordan Cowles in goal to give emerging keeper, Brooke Breault, a day of rest. Breault has been nursing an ankle injury of late. Both teams came out with their best stuff; LR’s Callie Cashin worked her way down the left sideline and missed wide right to open the game and Ashlyn Royce headed an Indian’s corner kick, up and over the cross-bar. But, just as she’s done all season long for the Lady Ranger’s, Tyrah Urie, drew first blood, slicing untouched through the Danville defense and putting LR on top 1-0.Freshmen Hailey Kennedy and Tori Adams have been getting a lot of playing time as of late for Coach Urie, and both of them are making it hard for him to keep them out of the line-up. Kennedy had 3 shots in the final 5 minutes of the first half and Adams narrowly missed her first varsity goal as Danville keeper Tanya DeMasi, made a sprawling save to her right.Even though the Rangers had the lead at half-time, the Indians were not ready to concede defeat. 5 minutes into the 2nd half Jacquelyn White, knotted the game at 1 apiece. Urie looked in position to get the lead right back, but her direct kick from 19 yards out clanged off the cross-bar and bounced harmlessly out of play. The Indians had the Lady Ranger’s on their heels for the remainder of the 2nd half, but Cowles came up big on each shot and sent the game into an overtime period.Adams looked as if she was going to end the game 3 minutes into the extra frame, but DeMasi came up with another big save for her Indians. With 2 minutes remaining Danville committed a handball in their own penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick for the Blue and White.Urie was called upon once again by her team and she promptly delivered by converting the PK. The goal was her 12th of the season and it gave the Rangers a hard fought overtime victory. After the game Coach Urie still wasn’t thrilled with the way the game turned out. “A win is a win and we will take the points, but at some point we have to put together the full 80 and not just 10-15 minutes at a time. During the overtime we played great, we kept the pressure on them and we won every ball, but we need to start being the aggressor for the whole game.”On the injury front, Coach Urie said that senior halfback Desirae Colorado had surgery on her foot earlier in the week and it is unclear whether or not she will return this season. The win runs Lake Region’s season record to 6-3-1 and keeps them in line to start the Division 2 playoffs in Orleans. They will return to action tomorrow night, when they travel to Winooski to face off against the Spartans. Kick-off is set for 4:00.
