By CHRISTOPHER ROY Express Staff Writer TROY — A late night fire that destroyed a garage and damaged a home Friday also sent one person to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Fire Chief Lee Forbes said his department was called for a garage fire at the Robert Combs residence on East Hill at 10 p.m. The house, eight feet away from the garage, had also caught on fire by the time firefighters arrived 10 minutes later. He said mutual aid was immediately called in from North Troy and Jay. Firefighters quickly knocked down the house fire before concentrating on the garage. The house sustained some exterior damage, but the owners were not displaced. However, the garage is considered a total loss. Also lost in the blaze was a car and some tools. The blaze is being considered an accident, said Forbes. He noted there was a wood stove in the garage where someone was working about an hour before. He said the person, whose name he doesn’t know, sustained smoke inhalation while trying to save the vehicle that was inside of the garage. Forbes said there were no problems in fighting the blaze. Thirty-five firefighters and seven trucks responded to the scene. Water was obtained from a hydrant at the fire station. East Hill does have dry hydrants, but they weren’t needed.
