IRASBURG - A fire destroyed an unused barn on theYoung Road in Irasburg Wednesday morning. Fire Chief Robin Beaton said yesterday afternoon, the barn had no electrical power and the blaze could be considered suspicious. A state fire marshall had been called to the scene, said Beaton.
The fire was called in around 5:50 a.m. by firefighter Doug Goodridge, who was on his way to work. Beaton, who lives only minutes away from the scene, was the first to arrive at the fire. At that time, the barn was only burning in one corner, but within moments, the entire structure was completely engulfed. The blaze was brought under control at around 9:30, but firefighters remained on the scene until 1:30, taking care of hot spots.
Beaton said firefighters were able to save a house that was about 25 feet away from the barn;, however, a truck parked between the two buildings and another one inside the barn were destroyed. Also lost in the fire were some household equipment owned by the barn's caretaker.
There were no animals in the barn, said Beaton.
Bill LaPierre, a former fire chief from Orleans Village who still works with the department, was on the scene and credited firefighters who saved some "out buildings." He noted the fire in one of the buildings was so hot it melted the asphalt siding.
It wasn't clear on Wednesday who the present owner of the property is. Most recently, it was used by a woman who passed away about five-six years ago.
An unidentified firefighter was transported to North Country Hospital in Newport for a complaint of chest pains. He was treated for smoke inhalation and released. Firefighters from Albany, Glover, Barton and Westmore provided mutual aid the at the scene.
