DERBY — For the second time in as many months, a Derby convenience store experienced a burglary.
According to State Police Sgt. Darren Annis and Senior Trooper Clark Lombardi, at 2:38 a.m. on  Dec. 26 state police responded to an alarm at the Derby Corner Mini Mart. When police arrived, they found someone had smashed open a side window, entered the store, stolen packs of cigarettes, and left before police arrived.
When contacted last week, store owner Mabil Ibrahim, said whomever broke into his store through the large plate glass window made a mess on the floor before leaving with a large amount of cigarettes, cigars, and lighters.
I
brahim said police were notified of the break-in by his alarm system. He also said it was the same type of break-in scenario Ibrahim experienced in November and he feels it was the same suspects both times. Now Ibrahim is adding more features to his security system.
“We keep spending more money and hopefully they will be caught,” he said of the suspects. He is also considering hiring a security guard to watch the store overnight.
In other police business, Det. Sgt. Mark Galle said in press release there is indication a fire at a home owned by Debra Blier on Toad Pond Road in Morgan, was intentionally set. Firefighters from Derby Line and Charleston responded to the blaze just after 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28.
Galle said the total loss is estimated to be around $150,000. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Vermont Arson Tip Award Program at 1-800-32-ARSON or Galle at 802-878-7111.
A $400,000 Freightliner tractor trailer is considered a total loss after it was involved in crash on Vermont Route 100 in Lowell Friday morning, Dec. 28.
According to  Capt. Allan Buck, Robin Wrice, 52, of Augusta Ga. was turning on a left hand curve near Stephenson Road when he lost control and went off the east side of the road and struck several trees before coming to a stop. Buck’s press release says the trailer started  to slide ahead  of the truck on the slushy road.
The 2005 truck ended up facing in a southerly direction, tying up traffic as Riverside Towing removed it from the scene.
Mississquoi Rescue responded to the scene with two ambulances to transport victims of the crash to North Country Hospital in Newport. State Police report that Michael Reil, 36, of South Burlington sustained back and chest injuries and Harry Donor, 39, of Middlebury sustained hips and left arm injuries. It is unclear how they are connected to the accident. Wrice, the truck driver, suffered a shoulder injury. Buck could not be reached on Tuesday, New Year’s Day.
Sgt. Jeremy Hill, of the State Police Commercial Truck Inspection Team will examine the truck. Wrice was  issued a ticket for going too fast for conditions. A load of furniture that was inside of the truck will be examined by the trucking company.
The Lowell Fire Department also responded to this accident.
Trooper Lombardi reports that Everett Gonyer’s 2004 red Ford Taurus with Vermont registration V2832 was stolen from a residence off Highland Avenue in North Troy sometime between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 20.
Someone stole a snowmobile from Christine Menard’s home on Nadeau Park Road in Coventry overnight on Dec. 22, Trooper Michael LaCourse reports. The machine is a 1996 Polaris XLT.
