By LAURA CARPENTER Express Staff Writer A home on the north side of East Main Street in Newport was fully engaged in fire when the fire department arrived Saturday night.
Newport City Fire Department Captain John Harlamert said Sunday the
fire is not suspicious but a request was made for a fire investigator
to determine the cause. The homeowner, Steve Morrow, told firefighters
he believes his clothes dryer started the fire. Morrow, who had been
doing laundry, said he was outside and went in the house and it was
full of smoke. The dryer was very hot.
Morrow warned the man living upstairs, and both were able to leave the house uninjured.
The Derby Line Fire Department and Newport Center Fire Department also
responded to the call that came in around 4:45 p.m. The fire was put
out within 45 minutes, and the fire departments stayed on scene until
9:15 to check for hot spots.
