IRASBURG - It wasnât the controversy, the lawsuit, the political heat or the publicity that lead to Randy Wells resigning from the Irasburg Select Board Monday night, although any of those things could have had that result.
Instead, it was a simple matter of residence.
Wells has moved to Newport.
Wells said Tuesday that three people are vying for his seat: Robin Kaye, Brent Shafer and Paul Turner. His replacement will be selected by the board, he believes, in two weeks, at the next board meeting. If the board canât agree, Wells said the matter may go to a public vote.
In either case, the position will only be filled until the March Town Meeting, when voters will get to elect a new board member.
In a letter to the select board, Wells wrote that he was submitting his resignation effective Oct. 3rd.
âIt has been an honor to serve on this board, and I have few regrets,â he wrote. âIt is important for individuals to be part of the town government process of running, and being an active member of your community.â
Wells wrote that he had been involved in town government in one function or another for almost 25 years, as a fire fighter, fire chief, town constable and select man.
âI have fulfilled my civic duty to my town,â he wrote.
He advised his replacement: âDonât take this job as a way to get something done for yourselves. The town should be first always!â
He ended by thanking the âladies in the clerkâs officeâ for making his job easier and thanking his fellow board members.
