FAIRFAX- If there was such a thing as a “Vegas line” on Thursday’s Lake Region vs. Fairfax high school softball game, it probably wouldn’t have been pretty.
On one side, you had Fairfax: Defending state champions, undefeated on the season at 10-0, winners of 30 of their last 31 games. And to top it off, they boast one of the best pitchers in the entire state in Kayla Mathieu, a hurler who started the season giving up just 2 hits in her first 20 innings of work, and has struck out 27 batters in her previous two games.
On the other side, you had Lake Region, a very young club who came into the contest struggling to find their groove, while trying to hurry up the maturing process with some of their inexperienced players.
But as the old saying goes, “that’s why you play the game.” And when the winds stopped blowing on the diamond Thursday, the gritty Rangers acquitted themselves quite well against the behemoth known as Fairfax, dropping a tight 7-2 battle.
