NEWPORT–After plating the go ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning, a tough top of the fifth sealed the fate of the North Country Falcons softball team.
While squaring off against the Mount Mansfield Cougars on Thursday, the Falcons were playing an exciting back in forth game that saw the lead change hands off and on throughout the first four innings.
In the bottom of the fourth tied 4-4, Mariah Roberts put the Falcons up 5-4 when she scored on a past ball.
The lead would not last long as Cougars tied it up in the top of the fifth, and on what should have been the final out of the inning, Kristen Guillette had a routine fly ball drop into her glove and pop out again, allowing the inning to continue.
Emi Pare, who caught two liners, and assisted on the third out also had an error when she took a ball hard off of her knee cap and was unable to get the ball to first base.
After that inning, in which MMU pushed six runs across the plate, North Country looked like a beaten team, and was unable to recover, losing 16-5.
