Richard Banker of Summerfield, Florida and Newport, Vermont died on June 13 after battling lung cancer for 10 weeks. Dick passed two days prior to his 80th birthday, peacefully under Hospice Care in his home surrounded by family in Summerfield.
Born Richard Elbridge Banker in Thetford Center, Vermont to Charles and Hilda Banker, Dick graduated from Thetford Academy in 1949 and immediately joined the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War Conflict. During his active and Reserve Service, Dick was a decorated Marine earning several honors.
Richard and Priscilla Bond were married on May 17, 1952, and recently celebrated their 59th Anniversary. Dick started his own Plumbing and Heating business and remained in the Hanover and Thetford area until his retirement in 1989. He specialized in both residential and commercial projects and completed work on several Dartmouth College, large mall, office building and hospital projects. He also owned and operated a plumbing, heating and paint store in East Thetford along with an apartment complex.
Dick was a true Vermont Sportsman, enjoying coaching youth teams, baseball, golf, hunting and fishing while also becoming involved in environmental initiatives.
Dick was predeceased by one brother, James and two sons, Brian and Gregory. Survivors include his wife Priscilla, sons Blair and Brett, sisters, Jeannie Buzzell and Nancy Piper, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who adored Uncle Snooky.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 30 at the Thetford Center Church at 2 pm. A Memorial Reception will be held immediately following at Thetford Academy’s Anderson Hall. Donations may be made in Dick’s memory to Thetford Academy, PO Box 190, Thetford, Vermont 05074 c/o Alumni Office.
