LYNDONVILLE– The OEC Kings American Legion baseball team swept the Burlington Lynx by scores of 4-2 and 6-5 at Skip Pound Field on the campus of Lyndon State College in the team’s home opening doubleheader on Sunday.
In game two, OEC shortstop Chris Sevigney ended a 12-inning marathon with a walkoff infield single to lift the Kings to 2-1 on the season.
OEC rode strong pitching performances in each game, beginning with Brandon Flood in the first contest. The Blue Mountain hurler spun a complete-game win, scattering four hits while allowing one earned running and striking out three. Flood faced just five batters over the minimum, retired the first 12 batters he faced and carried a no hitter into the fifth inning.
The Kings managed just three hits in the opener, but pushed the winning run across in unusual fashion in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jake Bielecki singled to lead off the inning, moved to third on back-to-back pitches to the backstop, and scored on a headfirst slide into home after Taylor Miller got caught in a rundown between first and second.
