DERBY - The Louis Garneau USA Company has applied to open a 60,000 square foot, two-story manufacturing facility on the Derby Road near the Interstate 91 exit ramp. Louis Garneau is a world leader in cycling helmets and apparel as well as a variety of other sport products. The company was started in Canada and an office was opened in Newport in 1989.
If the company proceeds with the project, the new building would house the manufacturing section, offices, and retail store that are currently located on East Main Street in Newport, according to a narrative filed with Derby.
The permit application states that the company could employ a maximum of 120 employees with 70 in manufacturing and warehousing and the remainder in office and retail areas.
The facility would be open Monday through Friday with occasional weekend hours for overtime work.
The estimated cost of construction is $7 million.
Although the company has filed to build, there are no definitive plans, yet, said Heidi Myers, communications coordinator with Louis Garneau in Newport.
