NEWPORT CITY – A long time Newport business has new owners. Lisa and Alan Desroches of Coventry have purchased Margie’s Half Off Cards from Margie and Larry Cummings of Montgomery Center.
The Desroches renamed the store to Suzy-Lynn’s Gifts & 1/2 Cards after their daughters, six-year-old Julia Suzanne and 18-year-old Natashia Lynn. Natashia is a freshmen at Lyndon State College. The Desroches also have a son, Nathaniel, who lives in the Woodsville, N.H., area.
Lisa Desroches always wanted to own her own business. “I call it a dream come true,” she said.
The Desroches plan to bring in some new items and keep many of the ones the previous owners had. Lisa Desroches is open to suggestions on product lines.
Alan Desroches said they are trying to stay with American made products as much as possible.
One of the most unique items the store carries is paper made out of recycled horse and cow manure, an item the Desroches found at a trade show a couple weeks prior to buying the store.
“Everybody thought it was a disgusting notion, but it’s actual paper,” said Alan Desroches. “It feels okay and it writes well. It’s actually very light weight. It seems to be kind of popular.”
If it continues to be popular, Alan Desroches said he would continue to carry it.
Desroches also carry wedding items like cake toppers, unity candles, picture frames and champagne glasses. They also sell plush toys, gift bags, balloons, baby outfits, over-the-hill products, wrapping paper, jewelry and much more. They want to see products that will benefit The American Cancer Society.
Prior to buying the store, Lisa Desroches worked at Pick and Shovel Hardware for 4 1/2 years. Earlier on, she worked at North Country Union High School. Alan Desroches works at Tivoly where he plans to stay. He will work at the store in a handyman capacity in the evenings.
The Desroches expanded the store hours to 9 AM to 6 PM and will stay open to at least six on Fridays. Desroches will have an open house on March 10 and 11
