HYDE PARK – The Lake Region Lady Rangers traveled to face off against the Lady Lancers of Lamoille Saturday, in what ESPN would call an “Instant Classic.” Trailing by as many as 14 in the second half Lake Region was able to rally back and pull of the 54-52 victory.
Lamoille came out of the gate hot building a 7-0 lead before the Rangers were able to rally and tie the score at 11 at the end of 1 period of play. Caylin Gallup’s successful and-1 gave the blue and white their first lead of the contest, a lead that would be built up to 21-13 with 4 minutes to go in the 2nd. But the Lancers battled and used a 15-2 run to regain the lead and send the game to its intermission with Lamoille on top 28-23.
The 3rd period belonged to home team as they were able to build a 14 point lead before Drew Neal’s catch and shoot at the buzzer cut the lead to 12 at 44-32, with 1 quarter of action to go.
While the 3rd belonged to Lancers, in the 4th it was all Lake Region. After mounting a furious comeback, Kylie Atwood tied the game at 47 with a long 3 point shot with 2 minutes to go on the clock. Ashley Locke would give LR a 48-47 lead after going 1 of 2 from the stripe and Emily Comins would extend the lead to 50-47 after 2 successful free throws. Atwood pushed the lead to 5, before Lamoille would cut the it back to 3 with 9 seconds to go.
After Gallup sent the gap back to 5, the Lancers would knock down a long 3, cutting it to 54-52 at the buzzer. The Lamoille coaching staff claimed there was still 1 second on the clock, but the officials were not having any part of the conversation, ending the game in Lake Region’s favor.
Coach Mark Tinker was grinning ear-to-ear after the thrilling victory, “That was a good win for us, I wanted to use this game as a measuring stick to see where we are and where we are at as a team. I am proud of the girls to fight back the way they did.”
The Lancers were led by Erin Stokes with 14 and Katie Lefreniere with 13.
The Lady Rangers were paced by Kylie Atwood and Caylin Gallup who each chipped in with 14. While Ashley Locke put home 6 and Emily Comins and Sarah Piette each added 4.
With the win Lake Region’s record now stands at (7-5) and they will take to the hardwood again tomorrow night in front of the home fans at the Don Harter Memorial Gymnasium. Tip off is set for
