CRAFTSBURY–In the consolation game of the Stephen Willey Memorial Tournament, the Whitcomb Hornets built a 43-24 lead at the half en-route to the 64-39 win over UCA.
The Crusaders, who were already shorthanded to start with, became more limited as Chris DeLaBruere was tagged for four fouls in the opening sixteen minutes, leaving him unable to compete at full strength.
Ji Kim had three fouls in the opening half, and would eventually bow out of the game with 2:33 left in the fourth.
The first quarter was a fairly close eight minutes of basketball.
UCA got nine points from Paul Saaman, five from Jon DeLaBruere, two from Dale Martell, and trailed just 21-16 after one.
The Hornets came out in the second and just went crazy, hitting from all over the court.
Levi West had fourteen of Whitcomb's twenty-three second quarter points, and would finish with seventeen on the night to lead the Hornets in scoring.
Turnovers really cost the Crusaders in this game, as time after time they tried to drive to the basket, only to be stripped, stopped, or flat out mishandle the ball, allowing the boys in green to go the the other way.
With a lead of nineteen points at the break, the Hornets let up a bit, scoring just twenty more points the rest of the way, but it was enough to hold off the Crusaders and pick up the win.
Paul Saaman led all scorers with twenty points. The DeLaBruere brothers each had seven, Ji Kim had three, and Dale Martell two.
Now United Christian has four days to prepare for their rematch with their opponent from the opening round of the tournament, Mid Vermont Christian, on Friday at home as part of a girls/boys double-header.
The girls will kick off the action at 4:30, followed by the boys at 6:30.
