NEWPORT, VT - Fire destroyed a garage at the Frances Bernier residence, 376 Pine Hill Road, yesterday.
Newport City Firefighters responded to the blaze at 7:15 a.m. While en route, Fire Chief Jamie LeClair requested mutual-aid from the Derby Line Fire Department.
Upon arrival, heavy flames were showing and the roof on the backside had collapsed. Firefighters suppressed the flames and protected the house that was eight to ten feet away.
“Firefighters did a great job supplying water and protecting the house,” LeClair said. Firefighters trucked in water from a hydrant on Mt. Vernon Street.
Firefighters had the blaze under control in 30 minutes and totally out in about two hours. The garage is a total loss. LeClair called in an excavator to tear down the garage for safety reasons. The exterior of the house sustained minor damage. There were no known injuries.
The cause of the blaze is undetermined and appears unintentional, LeClair said.
In all 32 firefighters and six trucks responded to the fire. Newport City Firefighters Auxiliary provided coffee to the firefighters.
