NEWPORT–With the sun shinning down upon them, the North Country girls' tennis team battled for over three hours, but came up just short against BFA St. Albans, losing 5-2.
"It was a long and extremely competitive match," said coach Marie George.
North Country got early wins from India Bluet, who defeated Summer Averill 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 and Carlie Diette who bested Hannah Averill 7-5, 6-2, but Rhiannon Rosamillia fell 6-1, 6-2 to Ali Evens, Kelsey O'Donnell lost to Michelle Kelley 6-4, 6-4, and Danielle Therrian and Brianna Grimm dropped the number two double match 7-6, 6-1 to make the score 3-2 in favor of the visitors.
The Falcons needed to win the final two matches in order to take the match, and although the girls gave it their all, the Comets were able to pick up two tie breaker victories to seal the win.
Ciara Bannisten topped Annie Arcoleo 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 and the number one doubles team of Dani Eswler and Elizabeth Rogers got past Moriah Lafoe and Sonya Hinton 5-7, 6-1, 1-0.
It was an encouraging loss for the team, one that they can build upon as they head to Montpelier today to take on a tough Solon squad.
