NEWPORT, VT - The 2012 Dandelion Run kicks off this year with The Dandy Dinner, Friday evening between 6 and 9:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend, there is a charge but it includes a post-dinner and a live music show.
Reckless Breakfast, a terrific contemporary Bluegrass band from the Hanover area, will be playing. Those who caught their performance at last year's festival, are likely not to miss their return.
At present, some 330 runners and walkers registered for the fourth annual running of the Dandelion, with 100 elementary school kids participating. This number nearly doubles that of last year's participants, which stood at 175 walkers and runners. The course follows dirt roads and runs through fields literally erupting with the sights and smells of spring.
Registration lasts from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with the 4-H Road in Derby closed off at 8:45 a.m. This means come early; walk-ins and run-ins are welcome. The half-marathon takes to the tarmac at 9 a.m.; the 10k run and walk follows at 9:10 a.m. Musicians will be playing at checkpoints as part of the Dandelion Festival of Bluegrass, which is being run in conjunction with the marathon. Among those playing are Kingdom Dixie, The Warner Band, and Doc Rudolph.
There will be a barbecue for all immediately following.
The event is hosted by IROC, and initiates at the Derby Beach house on the 4-H Road at Lake Salem, in Derby. Pricing varies depending on the course. More information is available at www.dandelionrun.org . Musicians interested in signing up to participate are encouraged to contact Phil White at (802) 334-8511 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org .
Sunday, May 20, at the NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston from 1:30 to 4 p.m., The Bayley-Hazen Boys are playing along with child phenom fiddler Patrick Ross. Both put on a great show and will accompany the potluck picnic. Bring a blanket and a spring-inspired dish. A suggested donation will benefit IROC and NorthWoods.
