NEWPORT–Nine runs in the second inning sealed the fate for the Lake Region 2 team as the North Country Orioles picked up the 11-0 win on Wednesday in the opening round of the 14-U Babe Ruth League Championship.
The deck was stacked against LR as they played the entire game with only eight players, and sent Devin Royer, who up until this point had never pitched at the Babe Ruth level, to the mound.
Royer gave it his all, but the Oriole bats were just too much to handle.
Nick Baraw, Bryce Carter, Matt Dumont, Mitchell Gonyaw and Ben Sykes all had hits in the big second, as did Keenan Warner, who made his return to the Newport baseball fields after a long absence.
Asked if he was glad to be back playing, Warner was all smiles, saying that indeed he was.
Seth Prue was masterful in his start for North Country, and Carter was lights out in relief.
Dillion Gile was the top performer for Lake Region, getting two of the team's three hits in the game.
In the play-off’s other game, Lake Region 1 earned the 7-6 win over the North Country Athletics setting up a second round of LR 1 vs LR 2 and NC Orioles vs. NC Athletics.
