NEWPORT–UCA's girls soccer team played in their home opener on Tuesday, hosting Winooski at Gardner Park, and while they lost 4-3, head coach Molly Smith likes what she saw from her team.
"I believed we shocked them, they thought they were going to come in and score many goals on us but we stood our ground and when they scored we came right back and scored, the game was at heart skipper.
“I think we earned some respect today, that we are not just a bunch of girls playing soccer,we are a team to beat.
“I am very proud of my team. We passed very well and were making plays when we needed them."
Amy DeLaBruere scored UCA's first goal on a perfect free kick over the goalie in the 34th minute of the first half.
Laura Libby had the other two goals for UCA, both coming in the second half.
Lydia Saaman had twenty-five saves in the game, while the Crusaders directed sixteen shots at the Spartan's Micheala Metvier.
