NEWPORT–Devinnie Davis just keeps on rolling.
The freshman netted another two goals on Tuesday as the Falcons shut-out their third straight opponent, defeating St. Johnsbury 4-0.
Davis has been playing at a high level all of her life, and she said that the transition to the varsity program was not as difficult as it may seem to others.
"I feel like a part of the team since I started playing (with NCU) and the girls welcomed me in," said Davis on where some of her confidence has come from.
Said coach Jose´Batista of his leading goal scorer, "She has a lot of speed and she is pretty intense and she is pretty hard on the ball, giving (other team's) backs fits when she does that."
Crystal Moss opened the scoring twelve minutes into the game, with Shelby Maniatty getting the assist.
Then it was Davis' turn, scoring off of a feed from Moss with fifty-two seconds left in the half to make it 2-0.
Junior Natalie Sykes took a pass from Anna Bingham and made it 3-0 a little over thirteen minutes into the second half.
Moss again hooked up with Davis for the final tally of the game, and Davis' second goal of the game.
Jenna Moss had six saves in the win, and was quick to say it is a team effort that is keeping the 0's on the opponent's score sheets.
"We have a strong defense and we hold it tight, but if one fails it is then on me and I always have my eye on the ball and it is not going to go in," she said confidently.
"I think we try to be well organized in the back and Jenna is pretty solid in communicating and controlling her space and that has helped us keep the ball out of our net," said Batista.
Standing at 3-0, Batista is not about to let his team be complacent with their current level of play.
"It was not our best total performance, and we did not control the game as we would have liked to," he said. "As we start getting into the season we got start playing a little better and take it to the next level."
The girls put their 3-0 record on the line this Friday under the lights as they wrap up the season series with the MMU Cougars.
Game time is 6:00 on Veterans Field.
