DERBY LINE – Looking for a bit of Christmas cheer? Look no further than the Louis and Gerry Barber residence where the couple has taken decorating to a new level.
Like many families, the Barbers decorate the exterior of their home with lights. On the inside of their home, the family has a Christmas village complete with tiny illuminated houses and a model railroad train set. Some of the decorations are even animated.
The Barbers start their decorating efforts just before Halloween and finish in late November. Louis will leave the exterior decorations up until the New Year and leave the interior decorations up until early February.
“We sit in the evening, watch TV, and look at the lights,” said Louis. “We just enjoy it.”
The Barbers don’t exactly know how long they’ve been decorating their home, but Louis thinks they started in the early 1980s. They're also not sure how they got started, but believe someone gave them a few of the lighted houses. Now they make purchases when they see them. The Barbers currently have 90 different buildings.
“I don’t know that we’re going to go much further,” Louis said. “We love it.”
Barber said the decorations don’t add much to his electric bill.
The couple opens their doors to students from the nearby Derby Elementary School who visit every year.
