NEWPORT–Fans of the North Country girls hockey team who expected to see the team make another run at the Division II state title will have to adjust their plans, as the Falcons will not be in the running in DII.
They will be in Division I.
North Country coach Claude Paul confirmed the decision on Wednesday when we spoke at the track meet.
To say Paul was less than thrilled is an understatement, although he didn't have time for a quote.
Harwood and Rutland will also be making the jump to DI, while Hartford and Burr & Burton are heading down to DII.
Not only does this eliminate a possible, and quite likely, Harwood-North Country rematch at the Gut, it will make it extremely difficult for either team to even make it to UVM, as DI has been ruled by BFA St. Albans and Essex since its inception in 2002.
The Comets have won 9 titles, most recently this past season, while Essex has grabbed the other 3.
The Falcons will have arguably their best team ever in 2013-2014, as North Country will be returning all but two players from their Division II runners-up squad from last season.
Plus, they are expected to gain a few more talented players from the youth leagues as well.
