NEWPORT–Isaac Bliss hit a two-run home run in the first inning and his teammates would score five more runs in the fifth inning, as North Country bested Lake Region 7-1 to kick off the 10-U district tournament on Monday.
After darkening skies threatened to post-pone the start of the tournament, the sun made an appearance for the duration of the game, and the two teams were able to get their game in.
Vermont State Cal Ripken Commissioner Bernie Gonyaw threw out the ceremonial first pitch, and after that it was game on.
Jack Young got the start for the home-town North Country squad, and Lake Region greeted him with a walk, as lead-off man Logan Ingalls earned the free pass.
Young settled down and fanned the next two batters, but Ingalls had worked his way around the bases via a past ball and a wild pitch to stand at third when Mitchell Poirier came to the plate.
Poirier's sharp-hit ball to first was too much for North Country's first baseman to handle, and he would be safe with Ingalls coming home to score the game's first run.
Young retired the next batter, bringing his team to the plate down by one.
With two men out, Bryce Gunn walked and then stole second base with Bliss at the dish.
Bliss then delivered a towering blast to left field, putting his team up to stay at 2-1.
Isaac would get things done in the field as well, making multiple catches in right-over the next couple of inning to keep Lake Region at bay.
Connor Davis would have a nice day in the field as well, gunning down the potential tying run at the plate in the third inning.
Nobody would score again until the bottom of the fifth when NCU went to work, plating five insurance runs in the inning.
Davis got things started with a bunt single, and he would score on an error when Nick Larame's drive got past the LR second baseman.
Larame moved to third on Kyle Martin's sac-fly and came home on Phillip Quijano's single.
David Lessard drilled an RBI double to plate Quijano, and took third on the throw.
Another error allowed Lessard to score, and Connor Lathe brought home Gunn with a single for the final run of the inning.
Lessard set down the side in order in the top of the sixth to earn the save.
Young picked up the win for North Country, while Poirier took the loss for Lake Region.
North Country will now square off against Green Mountain today, while Lake Region will face the loser of this contest on Friday.
