NEWPORT–With the sun shining bright, drying out a field that was soaked earlier in the day by rain, North Country amassed ten runs in the first four innings to defeat Lake Region 10-0 to advance to the Vermont State 10-U Cal Ripken Tournament.
David Lessard got the start for North Country, and he was on fire, striking out the first six batters he faced on twenty-nine pitches.
Lessard would get the offense started as well, drawing a first inning walk, stealing second and scoring on a double steal.
Bryce Gunn would also score in the first, after he reached on an error, stole second and was driven home by Daniel Lanoue.
In the second the runs kept coming, starting when Nick Laramie walked, stole second and came around to score on Kyle Martin's double.
Phillip Quijano reached on an error to put two men on for North Country, and Jack young singled to score Martin, followed by an RBI single by Lessard that brought home Quijano.
After Lessard swiped second, Gunn drove in Young, but Lessard would be gunned down at the plate on a terrific 9-4-2 play that featured Lake Region's Christen Poutre, Mitchell Poirier and Connor Ulrich.
In the third, Lanoue singled, and in a pattern that repeated itself throughout the game, stole second.
Camden Willis' RBI single scored Daniel, and a Riann Fortin single put two runners on base of the maroon and blue.
Martin blasted his second double of the contest to the base of the fence, scoring Willis.
Fortin eventually crossed home on a fielders choice, and it was 9-0 after three.
Gunn would come on to pitch the fourth, and he was lights out, striking out the side on twelve pitches.
North Country would put the game away in the fourth when Lanoue drove in Lessard for the game's tenth run, ending the contest via the ten-run rule.
With the win, North Country advances to the State Tournament in Manchester on July 6th.
Lake Region has a chance to make the tournament as well.
They will travel to Norwich to play a one game play-off with a chance to go the States on the line.
