NEWPORT CITY – The Newport City Council discussed city workers' insurance benefits Monday evening.
For 2013, the premium per employee is $513 per month with a cost share between the employee and the city. Jacques Roberge, of Poulos Insurance, attended the meeting to explain what will happen if the city retains him as its broker.
Newport could leave the coverage premium as it is now as long as the employees understand part of the fee goes to the broker, Roberge said. The broker's fee is a new rule as of a couple of years ago and replaces the insurance salesperson's commission. The rule ends up saving the city money because the state, not the brokers, decided the fee.
There are policy changes this year.
