NEWPORT CITY - A fire that destroyed a three-unit apartment building and damaged a second seven-unit building on Central Street in Newport City has been deemed accidental by fire officials. Newport’s fire chief and state fire investigators say the cause was electrical.
The fire call came in about 1:16 p.m. Thursday. While en route, dispatch told the firefighters the house was fully engulfed and a neighboring seven-unit apartment building caught fire as well. Newport City Fire Chief Jamie LeClair called in mutual aid from the Newport Center Fire Department and Derby Line Fire Department.
Within 25 minutes firefighters had the blaze contained to the first building.
