Charger Boys Look to Improve on Last Season

The Craftsbury Academy boys’ soccer team will once again be under the control of 2nd year coach Mike Ruetz. Coach Ruetz has worked with the majority of these players for the past 3 years, having been the 7/8th grade boys coach at Craftsbury, before moving up to the Varsity position.Having finished the previous season with a 4-10 record, Coach Ruetz knows that his team needs to improve. “It was my first year coaching Varsity, so there were a lot of mistakes by me as a coach and we showed improvement towards the end of the year,” said Ruetz. “Entering the playoffs as the last seed we ended up going up to Proctor, and we did ok, but Proctor was the defending State Champs, so we lost that game.Craftsbury is losing 4 key seniors from the year before: two strong strikers up front, a solid midfielder, and a defensive back. Because of this Coach Ruetz says he will have to change up his formation and try some players in new positions. “Instead of a flat-back-four on defense, I am going to try a Diamond formation this year. I am going to rely heavily on my core of 4 seniors this year though. Jason Martin, will play Sweeper and will be called on to hold down the fort on defense. Andrew Marckres will be our man in goal. Anthony Putvain, will be used mainly as a striker and Adam Allen, will be used as a sticker and Center-midfielder. Our team is very young though. I have 4 eighth-graders, 4 freshman, and 1 junior, to go along with my 4 seniors. One of my worries as a coach, is getting an early lead, and then losing it because of our age and inexperience.” When asked of his expectations for the upcoming season Coach Ruetz said, “It’s almost too early to tell. We showed a lot of promise so far this season, during practices and the UCA Jamboree. We have the fundamentals and we move the ball really well, we just need to quicker. My big goal for the year is going into the playoffs higher than the last seed. Last year’s goal was to make the playoffs, so I’m hoping this year to be further up in the standings. I’ve got a great group of seniors and I would love to get them a win in the playoffs.” The Charger Boys will kick off their Division 4 season with a home game against Cabot on Wednesday, September 7th. Game time is 4:30 pm.
