Chargers Drop Tough Game to Rochester 1-0

CRAFTSBURY– The Craftsbury Academy Charger Boys kicked off their season Saturday, against the Rockets of Rochester. It wasn’t the season opener they had hoped for as they lost a tight contest to the Rockets 1-0.The game was a hard fought battle as both sides battled for every inch on the soccer pitch. Craftsbury seemed to have the advantage with Rochester having only 10 players on their team, but the Chargers still couldn’t capitalize. The teams would go to the break, deadlocked at 0-0.The 2nd half played out much like the first half did, with both sides trying to break down the other. Craftsbury had their chances throughout the game, they just couldn’t capitalize. Freshman midfielder Mael LaScouzec worked the ball time after time up the sideline, and got numerous shots off from 20-25 yards out, only to be turned away by the Rochester keeper. Seniors Adam Allen and Anthony Putvain also looked like they were going to get Craftsbury on the board throughout the 2nd half, only to be turned away again by the outstanding play of the Rochester keeper. With 18 minutes left in the 2nd half Rochester scored the only game of the game, giving them a 1-0 lead and the victory. After the game Craftsbury Coach Mike Ruetz was visibly upset with the outcome of the game. “This was a very tough loss. They came out with 10 guys, they simply outplayed us. We were waiting for the ball to come to us; they simply stepped in and went the other way towards the goal. Don’t get me wrong, we played good soccer, and we had the right idea, we just have to do it faster. They were always one step ahead of us.”While the loss was a tough one Coach Ruetz did praise the plays of his players. “Andrew Marckres had at least 10 saves, he was phenomenal in goal. Adam [Allen] is a workhorse of our team. He was up playing striker, and when he saw the midfield was struggling he was constantly going back and helping on defense. Alex Vetere had a couple very nice looks on goal; he has a very beautiful shot.”The Chargers will look to get into the win column with a home game against Chelsea, on Thursday, September 15th. Game time is scheduled for 4:30.
