Community Thanksgiving Dinner Ready to Go!

DERBY - Preparations for the annual community Thanksgiving Day celebration are well underway. Work began weeks ago and many people are involved to make the day a special and memorable event.The event is Thursday at the Elks Club in Derby, and the Area Agency on Aging is coordinating everything along with the Elks Club.High school culinary arts students and several local restaurants are preparing the feast.Thursday morning, a group of volunteers will begin preparing for home delivery to those who cannot make it to the meal.Ken Gordon, executive director of the Area Agency on Aging, said he expects about 100 home delivered meals and approximately 300 individuals at the dinner. Those who want a home delivery or those who plan on coming to the event should make reservations as soon as possible, Gordon said. Reservations can be made by calling the agency at 334-2190.Doors will open at 11:00 a.m with live entertainment. Dinner will be served at noon. The menu is a traditional Thanksgiving feast complete with turkey and all the fixings, including coleslaw, potatoes, squash, cranberries, and desserts, along with a variety of drinks.Thirty volunteers are ready to give their time to help make the event as warm and festive as possible.“The Elks Club deserves huge credit for the incredible amount of work and time they put into this,” said Gordon.Gordon said donations have come in to support the event. Any monetary donations can be sent to the Area Agency of Aging. Additional funding received but not used to cover event costs will go the emergency fuel fund.Gordon said that reservations should be made as soon as possible to help plan enough food for everyone. All are welcome, and those who are able are asked to bring in a nonperishable food item to donate to a local food shelf.
