Mill River Moves to Downtown Newport City

NEWPORT CITY – After being vacant for several months, the former Landing Clothing store on Main Street will have a tenant.Building owner Tony Pomerleau said yesterday that Mill River Furniture will move into the downtown location from the Waterfront Plaza, which Pomerleau also owns. Pomerleau has owned the downtown location for less than a year. Mill River Furniture, founded in 2004, owns stores in St. Johnsbury and Littleton, NH, both in downtown locations, which seem to work well for the company. Mill River recently opened the Sleep Source in West Lebanon, NH. The company has been in Newport for 2 1/2 years. The existing plaza location is 3,500 square feet. The new store is 10,000 square feet of retail space on the first floor alone. It also has a 10,000 square foot basement and office space in the attic. However, Gray won’t immediately open the basement for retail. “He came in to get his feet wet,” Pomerleau said of Gray. “I’ve been pushing him to look at bigger things.”Gray plans to move within the next 60 days. The additional square footage means Gray will be able to display and carry more products. Newport will be the company’s largest store. It usually takes about three years for customers to get used to a new location and for the store to build a client base, Gray said. The new store will mean at least one additional part-time staff member.Pomerleau predicts Newport will be the company’s second or first best in sales. Pomerleau said he has a tenant in mind for the store at the Waterfront Plaza, but he’s in no hurry to push Gray out the door.
