Spring Flooding Begins In Derby

The Derby Elementary School entrance flooded Tuesday along St. Edward’s Cemetery (above left) next to the school, which is still under several inches of water. One lane of the road is closed due to floodwaters. Derby Road Foreman Terry Tice said Wednesday that in 15 years he has seen flooding in that particular area, this is only the second time that it is really bad. Over the summer, Tice said, he is going to look into building a culvert or some other options to deal with the flooding in the area. Tice expressed frustration because someone took the high water sign from the road and threw it in a field. He said signs are often taken, and cones are run over. Brian Fletcher with the Village of Derby Line said that the village isn’t having too many problems with flooding, but he noted the problem at the cemetery. He said the ground is unable to take in the water at this time because it is still frozen. (Photo by Laura Carpenter)
