U-16 Shamrocks Win All-Vermont Final in Cape Cod Classic

CAPE COD, MA–The Vermont Shamrocks U-16 girl’s team won the Cape Cod Classic this past weekend, beating a host of teams from the Northeast Region of the United States, including the U-19 Shamrock team from Vermont.They opened the tournament with a win over the Connecticut Northern Lights, who according to sources, featured a coaching staff a parental group that were beyond awful in their demeanor.Former Shamrock Salley Hoer said hello to her old teammates in game two as Vermont faced off against the Cranston Reds.The green and white won the contest decisively 4-1.They put up another four goals in their next game against the Barnstable Raiders, winning easily 4-0.If you thought the Northern Lights were a rough group, they were tame compared the team the Shamrocks faced next, the Albany Ice Cats.To give you an idea of what kind of players the Ice Cats were, the scoreboard had two ten minute majors and two minors under their name as the game drew to a close.Vermont earned another shut-out in the 2-0 win, and Albany earned another penalty after the game when a player decided to showcase her profanity skills to the referee.Game five was the highest scoring match of the tournament for the girls.They once again gave up no goals while putting a five-spot on the board against the Boston Breakers.This brought them to the championship game against the U-19 Shamrocks.With the score 1-1 after regulation time, the two teams headed to overtime, but the extra session yielded no results.So it was on to the shoot-out where the U-16 girls edged out U-19's 2-1 to pick up the win.A funny note about the tourney itself; A week prior to the start, seven teams from the U-16 division called and canceled for various reasons.When asked by the tournament director what he would like to do, Coach Burke had his team put in the U-19 bracket, which seemed to suit the team just fine.As for the local players competing for the Shamrocks, Taylor Morley, Corrina Cota and Whitney Bernier will trade in the green and white for maroon and blue as pre-season workouts begin this week for the 2012-2013 winter sports season.The Express will begin it's winter previews in the coming days, so be on the lookout to find out how your favorite teams are shaping up for the upcoming season
