NEWPORT CITY- The Vermont Department of Corrections has confirmed an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Northern State Correctional Facility. To date, 25 incarcerated inmates have tested positive for the virus, as has seven staff members.
Seventeen of the cases are attributed to a COVID-positive staff member who works in their unit. The facility is now in full lockdown.
"People are not cohorting in groups; they're confined to their cells," Rachel Feldman said. Feldman is a principal assistant and public relations officer at the Department of Public Safety.
Feldman said the only movement between units is if the isolation room needs to be used. The unit where the outbreak occurred serves as a surge unit. Otherwise, visitation has been suspended and the positive staff members are quarantined.
The first positive case was confirmed Aug. 27. Four of the positive cases are from the three remaining units and the infirmary.
